The Japanese metal-blade former is a measuring tool traditionally used to capture and reproduce complex profiles — whether moldings, carvings, arches, or irregular edges — to facilitate their reproduction or adjustment on other pieces.
It consists of a set of thin stainless steel rods (0.75 mm in diameter) that slide independently within a solid body. To use it, simply press the former against the shape you wish to reproduce: the rods move by friction to instantly record the contour in positive and negative.

Each version of the tool is adapted to a different measuring range thanks to the length of the metal rods, which varies according to the format:
- 150 mm – 85 mm rods, measurement taking up to approximately 147 mm.
- 200 mm – 120 mm rods, measurement range up to approximately 190 mm.
- 300 mm – 150 mm rods, measurement taking up to approximately 300 mm.
