The Nagura polishing stone is a traditional Japanese accessory used in conjunction with Japanese water stones. It creates a fine abrasive slurry on the surface of the main stone, thus improving cutting quality, sharpening consistency, and edge finish.

Nagura is also used to clean the stone, remove metallic residue, and restore evenness to the working surface. It is particularly recommended for medium to fine-grit stones, where the mud plays a key role in the progression and polishing process.
